Qatar Energy Corporation’s Net-Zero Emissions Supply Chain Strategy

Abstract

As a large liquefied natural gas (LNG) producer, Qatar Energy LNG developed a strategy to move toward net-zero emissions after a period in which it increased its emissions. In 2017 Qatar Energy announced the expansion of its North Field site, which greatly increased the company’s production capacity. Five years later, the company signed several contracts with European countries to replace the Russian pipeline, which supplied half of European countries’ demand for LNG. These actions increased the emissions generated by Qatar Energy significantly. Qatar Energy’s Executive Vice President (VP) of Surface Development and Sustainability took some actions toward reducing CO2-equivalent emissions, but he faced more challenges in 2023 to reduce emissions along the supply chain to achieve zero routine flaring emissions. The company needed to achieve a 15% reduction in emissions from upstream supply chain operations, 25% from the LNG facilities’ direct and indirect emissions, and 0.2% from weight methane intensity by 2027. Students will analyze the effectiveness of the carbon capture and storage strategy adopted by Qatar Energy and recommend the best supply chain actions for this LNG corporation to achieve net-zero emissions.
