Abstract
Land speculators in U.S. history are a much-maligned group, but the larger effects of their actions are debatable. This case presents a brief account of buying and selling land in U.S. history, with an eye towards the ethics of the practice. The case presents both positive and negative assessments of land speculation, giving students the chance to debate the topic from both sides. It encourages critical thinking, normative evaluation of a complex topic, and the use of historical evidence to defend an ethical position.
