Five Guys: From Customer to Franchise Owner

Abstract

This case presents the challenges faced by a potential entrepreneur called Carolina in her plans to open a Five Guys franchise restaurant in a new country, Portugal. To implement her idea, Carolina started by reviewing the franchise disclosure document and carried out a survey to gather information about the burger restaurant industry. The case highlights the steps required to evaluate a new investment, namely forecasting cash flows, identifying the associated risks, analyzing the industry, and evaluating the financing options. The case also explores the option of delaying the project.

Carolina had to decide whether to open a new franchise restaurant or to accept a job offer. She is unsure of the investment viability as well as the risks associated with the project particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic. Weighing in her decision are also the financing options available to her.
