Paula Cowan, PhD, is Senior Lecturer in Education at the University of the West of Scotland. She researches, publishes and teaches in the area of school-based Citizenship and Holocaust Education. She was commissioned by the Scottish Executive to write teaching resources for primary and secondary schools to accompany the introduction of a national Holocaust Memorial Day and is a founding trustee of the UK Holocaust Memorial Day Trust. She is a UK delegate on the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance and a member of the Holocaust Memorial Day (Scotland) Steering Group. In 2015 Paula was awarded an Outstanding Achievement Award for her work in Holocaust Education from the Children’s Identity and Citizenship Europe Association (CiCeA), a research association that focuses on Citizenship Education and identity formation in young people.

Henry Maitles is Professor of Education and Assistant Dean in the School of Education at the University of the West of Scotland. He researches, publishes and teaches in the area of citizenship and values and in particular the impact of citizenship initiatives, such as the Holocaust, in schools. He was a member of the Scottish Executive Review Group, which drew up the proposals for Education for Citizenship which is a policy priority in all Scottish schools. He is on the editorial boards of the Journal for Critical Education Policy Studies and Citizenship Teaching and Learning. He is a former President of CiCeA and an Executive Member of Children’s Identity and Citizenship in Europe, an EU Jean Monnet-funded research network. The authors’ co-edited book, Teaching Controversial Issues in the Classroom, (Continuum, 2012) includes several chapters on teaching the Holocaust.
