All chapters in this Second Edition of Increasing Multicultural Understanding have been revised and updated, and there are two new chapters on Muslims and Jews in the United States. The author presents a model which helps counsellors understand culturally different groups and the role culture plays in shaping the way people think, feel and act, and which provides the tools necessary for fostering positive and productive relationships among culturally diverse populations.

The Indochinese include the Vietnamese, ethnic Chinese, Cambodians (Khmer), Laotians, Hmong, and Mien. They are of diverse ethnic origins and are among the most recent immigrants to the United States. Of the approximately 1 million Indochinese who have come to the United States since 1975, the largest number have come from Vietnam.
An initial, naive thought about the Vietnamese people who immigrated to the United States could lead to the question why these people came. The U.S. Bureau of the Census (1991) reported the Vietnamese American population as approximately 615,000 and projected an increase to 1.6 million by the year 2000.
