Throughout much of the early history of the field, the term “developmental psychology” was often merely a synonym for “child psychology.” Most psychologists who labeled themselves as “developmental” were really researchers of childhood, and most texts in “developmental” were really texts about children. This state of affairs no longer holds true. Life-span treatments of development, both in general texts (e.g., Cavanaugh & Blanchard-Fields, 2015) and in more advanced treatises (e.g., Schaie & Willis, 2016), have proliferated. Within this general broadening of scope there has been special interest in the last part of the life span and the changes and challenges of old age.
