Most schools are vigilant in their efforts to select reading programs that provide systemic and explicit instruction to expose students to rich forms of narrative and informational texts. In many elementary schools, classes are scheduled with designated opportunities for developing reading and writing skills—blocks of time in the school day devoted to literacy learning. English language arts (ELA) lessons are carefully planned to include various activities to promote different aspects of literacy development—shared reading, word work, independent reading, small-group instruction, readers and writers workshops, and so on.
