Professor Richard Mansbach explains how identity-based conflicts can arise from religion, race, ethnicity, nationality, and other sources. He touches on several identity conflicts in the Middle East and in Africa, and points out that these conflicts are often misunderstood as interstate problems rather than identity-based problems.
