      [Cultural Proficiency Leadership Lens]

    • 00:10

SPEAKER 1: The premise, of cultural proficiencyis summed up in these two lines.Being aware of how we work with others, being aware of how we respond to thosewho are different from us.And again, I did multicultural education first.I was trying to study other people.Other people, other people, figure outall the other people.

    • 00:30

SPEAKER 1 [continued]: What I had to know was me, and I respondedto those who are different from me.That's the critical issue.First of all, you can't ever learn all the other cultures. There are too many to many variations.Culture is too complex. But how do you respond to all the differencethat you encounter? And that's where you have to keep looking in here.

    • 00:52

SPEAKER 1 [continued]: You have to looking inside of yourselfto determine, how do I respond? And I've discovered, sometimes, my responsehasn't always been exactly ideal as I'veencountered different cultures.I've had to step back. And I've had to have some long talks with me about whereI thought I was cool-- until I encountered something.

    • 01:13

SPEAKER 1 [continued]: And all the sudden, geez, where'd that come from? Those awakenings-- you all have those moments.Where'd that come from?I thought I was cool.

    • 01:23

SPEAKER 2: I'd like to emphasize one key term here for us.And that is the concept of the lens.We really talk about cultural proficiencyas not being something additional we do.But it's how we do our current work.So it's the lens by which we takea look at our current work.So if we're leaders, it's how we reallytake a look at that role of leader in the daily processesthat we do, or the macro processes we do.

    • 01:45

SPEAKER 2 [continued]: But it's not something additional. It's not something off the shelf. That's how we view ourselves in context of how we work.
