In an era of increased accountability and fiscal restraint, program evaluations are becoming the norm in order to increase effectiveness and efficiency for service delivery. There are multiple ways to undertake the evaluation of programs including process monitoring and evaluation, and formative and summative evaluations. These can be conducted by the focal organization alone, in consultation with key stakeholders, or in collaboration with stakeholders. There are different views on whether there is one best way to approach program evaluation (i.e. the universalist vs. contingency view). This chapter will outline the foundations, designs, tools, and considerations for effective program evaluation in sport management.
