Without government support organised sport at both domestic and international levels would decline dramatically and in some sports almost cease to exist. Even those highly commercial sports such as American football, Formula 1, professional road cycling, golf and soccer would be altered dramatically if the public policies that support them were withdrawn. The importance of public policy in relation to community sport and most Olympic sports is far more evident. In many countries it is the state that provides most of the facilities for community sport either through local government or through educational institutions.
