Network structures appear in many different areas: social relations between individuals, economic transactions, spread of infections, behavioural patterns among children, co-offending activities of offenders, links between Internet sites and so forth. Data collected in an investigation of a particular network are normally confined to only partial information about the network. Special statistical methodology is being developed both for modelling networks, for planning and designing network investigations, and for analysing network data and drawing appropriate conclusions. The role of survey sampling in this connection is the topic of the present chapter.
