Introduction

In this chapter we address the theoretical and empirical foundations of network approaches in macrosociological studies of the world system, we offer multiple-network findings to address the structure of the modern world system and nations’ positions in it. With these results, we replicate the pioneering global network findings of Snyder and Kick (1979). Their effort still enjoys considerable currency in the literature (see Mahutga, 2006), but they use network data from the early 1960s that are now a dated representation of the modern world system.
