The Handbook of Research Management is a unique tool for the newly promoted research leader. The so-called ‘impact agenda’ has recently surfaced as an explicit challenge for academics in a number of countries, particularly the United Kingdom and Australia. Elsewhere, it remains merely a glint in the eye of some policymakers or a source of horrified fascination for academics. Impact seems like a hangover from the sort of central planning that was fundamentally hostile to traditional academic values of free and disinterested inquiry and robust challenge to established societal assumptions.
