Introduction

Theory of Change (ToC) has recently become one of the main planning, monitoring and evaluation instruments used in international development and social change sectors. In this chapter, we follow Vogel's (2012) understanding of ToC as an umbrella term that includes all models and processes that describe how change has, or might happen. Elements of a ToC are usually captured in a diagram and an accompanying narrative that can be used for multiple purposes, including strategic planning, accountability, communication, monitoring, evaluation and learning (James, 2011).
