INTRODUCTION
This chapter examines fear in the classroom, which is seen as a necessary side effect of authoritarian pedagogy, itself fuelled by historical purposes in education. It suggests that it is through the authoritarian pedagogy itself, based on fear, that purposes of schooling continue to focus on conformity rather than transformation. In reporting on some children's experiences of fear in the classroom, I am recognizing their untapped potential to transform their own schooling. At the same time I am making connections between their perceptions of how and why fear influences their learning within an authoritarian framework and investigating how the structures of authoritarian pedagogy seem to persist in a fear-inspiring manner.
