The population is getting older as a whole in the United States. According to Vincent and Velkoff (2010), demographic projections show that more than 20 percent of the total US population will be age 65 or older by 2050, up from 13 percent in 2010. Furthermore, this population aging trend is also demonstrated and projected by data from other countries and regions (e.g. the European Union, Japan, China, and India; Tyers & Shi, 2007).
