Introduction
Losing one's job is a significant, stressful life event. The potential negative effects of job loss and unemployment on individuals are well-documented (e.g. McKee-Ryan, Song, Wanberg, & Kinicki, 2005; Murphy & Athanasou, 1999; Paul & Moser, 2009). Unemployed workers display lower mental and physical health, life satisfaction, and marital and family satisfaction (McKee-Ryan et al., 2005). Meta-analytic, cross-sectional results showed that unemployed workers experience greater psychological distress levels (Paul & Moser, 2009) and reduced mental health (McKee-Ryan et al., 2005) relative to their employed counterparts (medium effect sizes of d = 0.51 and d = 0.52, respectively).
