In the inaugural version of this handbook, Mathieu, Marks, and Zaccaro (2001) advanced the concept of multiteam systems as a new unit of inquiry and analysis, in which teams-of-teams needed to coordinate their efforts to achieve one or more goals that were beyond the individual team goals.
