Officially known as the People's Republic of China, mainland China is located in East Asia. It is the most populous country in the world – in 2015, there were more than 1.37 billion inhabitants in China, with approximately 56% of them residing in urban areas, and 44% in rural areas (China Statistical Yearbook, 2016).
