It is widely accepted that sexual abuse and sexual violence are significant global problems affecting millions of people annually, in particular women and children. Globally, it is estimated that at least one in three women experience some form of physical or sexual violence in their lifetime (World Health Organization [WHO], 2013) and in the UK the figure is one in five (Office for National Statistics [ONS], 2018).
