In recent years, the growing prominence of anthropological scholarship on inequality, oppression, and precarity has been widely discussed within the discipline. In a 2016 article, anthropologist Sherry Ortner described the rise of a ‘dark anthropology’ beginning in the 1990s, which ‘emphasizes the harsh and brutal dimensions of human experience, and the structural and historical conditions that produce them’ (2016: 49).
