Introduction

Heritage is often thought of as old and venerable, but the terms cultural and natural heritage only became internationally commonplace with UNESCO's World Heritage Convention of 1972,2 and received a further boost with the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Convention of 2003.3 But while the terms are relatively recent, the practices that they denote – conservation of natural sites, and preservation of cultural sites, objects and practices – are much older, and in many historical and cultural contexts conservation and preservation was already practiced in various forms.
