When we were first approached to edit a volume for the SAGE Handbook of the Social Sciences series, it was a request to assemble a Handbook on anthropology. The request came from a sociologist, and over a coffee and conversation we explained that in the American tradition of anthropology, there are at least four subfields within the discipline (archaeology, biological anthropology, linguistic anthropology, and cultural anthropology).
