This extensive Handbook brings together different aspects of critical pedagogy with the aim of opening up a clear international conversation on the subject, as well as pushing the boundaries of current understanding by extending the notion of a pedagogy to multiple pedagogies and perspectives. Bringing together a group of contributing authors from around the globe, the chapters will provide a unique approach and insight to the discipline by crossing a range of disciplines and articulating both philosophical and social common themes. I am a little bit older than Paulo Freire's ‘The importance of the Act of Reading’ (1983). I was six when he addressed the Brazilian Congress of Reading in 1981, and I could not yet read. Thinking through the writing of this short reply to Freire's seminal talk, has me, as Freire notes, ‘re-reading an essential moment in my own practice of reading’ (1983: 5, emphasis in original), in order to think about my early reading of the word. It has also provoked a reflective comparison with the experiences of my children.
