The study of contemporary China constitutes a fascinating yet challenging area of scholarly inquiry. Recent decades have brought dramatic changes to China's economy, society and governance. Since economic reforms were introduced in the late 1970s in rural China, the country has witnessed a remarkable reduction in the extent of poverty. Fewer and fewer Chinese consume at a level below the poverty line the World Bank uses for assessing poverty globally, and official statistics on income poverty for rural China tell the same story. However, according to both these benchmarks, poverty remains a problem for millions of households and people living in rural China.
