South Dakota is one of the least populated states in the nation. Its most impoverished residents live primarily in rural areas of the state, meaning that they often face factors, such as lack of access to services, which are prevalent in remotely located environments. South Dakota is also a state where minorities, in particular, struggle. The state contains a large population of Native Americans, and its reservations have some of the highest rates of poverty in the nation. Minorities in general have a higher rate of poverty and lower rate of business ownership within the state.
