Malnutrition
Malnutrition is a condition caused by the lack or excess of one or more of the dietary nutrients necessary to maintain health. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN), in 2012, approximately one in eight people globally, or 842 million people, suffered from chronic hunger. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that in 2012 more than one-third of all child deaths were linked to malnutrition.
Forms of Malnutrition
Prevailing forms of malnutrition include macronutrient deficiencies (insufficient intake of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins), micronutrient deficiencies (insufficient intake of essential vitamins and minerals), and excess caloric intake (overnutrition).
