Lung: Current Research on Isolation or Production of Therapeutic Cells

Pathologies associated with the lungs are becoming increasingly prevalent and are one of the major causes of illness and death throughout the world. Among the most common of these lung diseases are the chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPDs), which include conditions such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and chronic obstructive airways.

Stem cells hold great promise for developing novel therapeutic techniques to treat a wide range of lung diseases. The past few years have seen more and more research into the application of stem cells in the field of lung pathology. New approaches currently being investigated in clinical trials include engrafting of cells to repair injured lung tissue, immunomodulation of lung diseases using mesenchymal stem cells, and bioengineering of the entire organ.
