Reproductive Rights Movement

Reproductive and sexual rights have had a long history of struggle across the United States. In most countries, they are still a contentious issue; yet they continue to be at the forefront of cultural transformation and women’s development. Only since the early 2000s has the concept of gender joined the discourse around reproduction, sexuality, and rights. Thus, this entry analyzes how gender has permeated and shaped the reproductive rights movement. Concepts of reproductive health, reproductive rights, and reproductive justice are explored in light of the notion of gender in an increasingly interconnected and diverse world.
