Pathologizing Gender Identity
Gender is a fundamental concept that helps people categorize those with whom they interact. Assumptions that are made about a person’s gender can lead to problematic interactions that serve to alienate people, especially those who have a gender diverse identity. This entry discusses assumptions about gender, gender norms, and the diagnostic considerations of gender.
Gender Norms
Gender is enforced in a number of ways. The result of that enforcement often leads to difficulties for people regardless of their gender identity or expression. In this section, we will explore the ways in which gender enforcement affects cisgender women, transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) people, and cisgender men.
