Machinima is a born-digital narrative medium that sprang out of computer game technology and play during the mid-1990s. The essential activity described by machinima is the production of animated movies performed and captured by players in game environments and then edited and distributed using some combination of game software, video, and network technology. The word machinima is a portmanteau derived from the words machine and cinema. Machinima evokes an idea of animation generated by machine (game engine); it also proposed a general conception of game-based moviemaking as a new media form, not one based on a particular game.
