Online classes are educational experiences delivered through Internet technologies outside of traditional brick-and-mortar classroom settings. Online learning can take place either in synchronous or asynchronous virtual learning environments. Students can enroll in online coursework at for-profit, nonprofit, and public schools. For-profit schools provide specialized skills and are operated by private businesses and/or corporations to generate revenue for their investors. For-profit schools generally have open enrollment and shorter duration courses, many of which are taught predominately online, allowing students the flexibility to take courses as needed. Nonprofit and public colleges and universities have tax-exempt status, and student tuition is invested back into the institution in the form of employee salaries, curriculum development, and building maintenance.
