Uruguay

The media in Uruguay share many of the key characteristics of other media in the Latin American region. In common with other countries under military rule during the 1970s and 1980s, its media have been subject to periods of severe censorship. Similarly, an ongoing key concern for the democracy of its media is the high levels of concentration of media ownership and the way in which this tends to reduce representation of diverse groups in society. On the other hand, Uruguay’s media have features that distinguish them in the region. Its media outlets have consistently been rated among the freest in Latin America by Freedom House (e.g., in the 2017 report, Uruguay was rate as free).
