Palestine, the historic homeland of Palestinian society, has been, along with Lebanon, Israel, and Egypt, one of the nodal points in the print media landscape of the Middle East and Arabic/Hebrew language media activity worldwide. This country’s modern formation and breakup has been a keystone of the tensions and confrontations in the region, with global ramifications. Beginning with Ottoman times and following on to the current situation, the following account primarily examines the Arab Palestinian modern media [Page 1320]landscape, although a degree of crossover to other Levantine and to Israeli media activity is inevitable given the internecine nature of these societies’ relationships.
