The Republic of Moldova is located in Eastern Europe with a total population of approximately 3 million people. The form of government is Parliamentary constitutional republic. Less than half the population lives in urban areas and the main ethnic groups are Moldovans, Romanians, Ukrainians, Gagauzians, Russians, and Bulgarians.

Before 1991, the major media holder in Moldova was the State. After 1991, due to the lack of Moldavian (national) capital in the field of mass media, the main competitors were the state-owned media (i.e., the state-owned national television inherited from the former Soviet Union television, the national radio, and a few newspapers) and some private operators.
