More than ever, couples and families are seeking the help of professional therapists in order to cope with mental health, marriage, family, and couples problems. It is important that effective treatments are offered to these frequently distressed individuals, but there are a great number of marriage, family, and couples therapy models from which to choose. The humanist Rollo May once concluded that there are over 300 different models of therapy; however, it appears that a large number of these models are not backed by empirical research.
