Adolescent behavior problems are defined as behaviors that have negative consequences for the adolescent and the environment. Externalized behaviors can include aggression, defiance, delinquency, and other behaviors of conduct and discipline. The onset of these behaviors may be a result of poor adjustment to stressors, such as faulty parenting, lack of resources, and past trauma. They can also be a result of increased pressures during adolescence, including negative peer relationships, faulty parenting, and poverty. The short- and long-term effects and costs of these behaviors to the adolescent, families, and society can be devastating.
