Supervision, Approved Supervisor in Marriage and Family Therapy

The American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) offers an approved supervisor designation. Supervision by a more experienced member of the mental health profession is often required by state licensing boards, but most other mental health professions do not have a separate process for achieving a specialized supervisor designation. AAMFT requires a professional identity as a marriage and family therapist (MFT), specialized training, and supervision experience. At the core of the MFT identity is being a systemic thinker (one who thinks in terms of relationships, patterns, and mutual influence) who practices therapy using systemic theories.
