Couples who experience mutually satisfying sexual experiences typically report higher levels of intimacy and overall relationship satisfaction. A relationship can become strained when one or both partners are experiencing sexual dysfunction. In marriage and couples therapy, sexual dysfunction refers to emotional and relational distress experienced by one or both partners that was caused by unsatisfying experiences during sexual intercourse. Approximately one third of Americans experience sexual dysfunction at some point in their lives. There are a variety of negative consequences for couples when one or both partners are experiencing sexual dysfunction, including anxiety, depression, relationship stress, emotional disconnect between partners, and separation.
