Diagnostic Reading Assessment

A diagnostic reading assessment (DRA) is an individually administered reading assessment used to diagnose possible causes of reading difficulties, identify student strengths and specific areas for remediation, and provide information for planning and instruction. A DRA can also be used to determine approximate reading levels and fluency rates. A common term for a DRA is an informal reading inventory. In the hands of a knowledgeable teacher, the DRA provides data than cannot be obtained from standardized tests.
