Acoustics

Acoustics describes the physical nature of sound, how it is created, and how it travels in free space and within enclosures. The variation between the acoustics of the spaces we live in, whether away from human-made structures or within them, can have a marked effect, for example, on how easy it is to (a) hear and be aware of the presence of a sound; (b) interpret the nature of the sound, be it understanding speech or singing from other humans; (c) clearly hear sounds from animals; (d) be alerted by warning or other sounds from electronic gadgets; (e) pick up sounds from the local environment; or (f) build a mental picture of the physical nature of the local environment.
