Writing represents an extension of oral language. It is a relatively recent invention in human history and only was created around 3500 BCE. Writing was not a single invention but rather a development that took a long time, advancing through different steps of complexity. Although writing began several millennia ago, it has not yet extended to all people, and a significant proportion of the human population cannot write. Writing has continued developing, and consequently, significant changes in writing strategies currently are observed, particularly associated with the progressively increasing use of computers and other electronic devices such as cellular phones.
