Medical leave allows employees to balance their work responsibilities and personal needs by taking job-protected leave for medical reasons such as illness, pregnancy, childbirth, and infant care. Medical leave provides workers with job security, which is also a safeguard for workers against loss of income and accrued benefits. Medical leave reduces employee turnover costs, as hiring new workers requires training costs. At the same time, medical leave boosts employee morale, loyalty, and productivity. In particular, medical leave provides female workers time to recover from childbirth and take care of their newborns without worrying about their career. It also increases female workers’ economic stability and their likelihood of returning to work after childbirth.
