The Reggio Emilia approach is an educational philosophy founded within the municipal preprimary schools and infant–toddler centers system of education in Reggio Emilia, Italy (serving children from birth through age 6). Named by Newsweek in 1991 as the best preschools in the world, these schools and the Reggio Emilia approach have been the source of much discussion and research in the early childhood field worldwide. The schools are part of a public system recognizing the fundamental rights of the child and the welfare of children and families as well as valuing democracy and coparticipation of educators, children, teachers, and community.
