Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder
Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is a new eating disorder diagnosis in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), published in 2013, and signifies one of the most substantial revisions to the Feeding and Eating Disorders section. It is characterized by avoidance or restriction of food leading to one or more of the following: (a) weight loss or lack of expected gain during a period of growth, (b) nutritional deficiencies, (c) reliance on oral or enteral nutritional supplementation, and (d) psychosocial dysfunction.
