Gender Dysphoria: Risk for
Gender dysphoria (GD) is a diagnosis included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), the classification and diagnostic system of the American Psychiatric Association. GD refers to a persistently uncomfortable incongruence between an individual’s experienced gender, or affirmed gender, and the gender they were assigned at birth, and in which they were raised. For the diagnosis to apply, the incongruence needs to be experienced for a minimum of 6 months and must cause clinically significant levels of distress or impairment in social, school, or occupational realms.
