Depression in Childhood: Treatment

Depression in childhood and adolescence is common, consequential, and recurrent. Youth-onset depression has been linked with a number of negative outcomes, including poor academic achievement, deficits in interpersonal relationships, and increased risk of suicide. As such, treatments for youth depression target both the symptoms of the diagnosis and also these problem areas. Relative to the history of treatment for depression in adulthood, youth depression treatment research has a relatively short history, with the first randomized controlled trial for youth with diagnosed depression appearing in the 1980s. Development of treatment models for youth depression has largely involved adapting evidence-based treatments for adults to make them developmentally appropriate in language and content for youth.
