Although it might seem that the independent practice of mental health counseling has been around for many decades, this is far from the truth. Counseling can be traced to the early 1900s (Gladding, 1988); however, it was not until the late 1960s and early 1970s that the independent practice of counseling and psychology truly began. At that time, several important events occurred that drastically changed the manner in which mental health services were provided to the general public.
