Professional counselors are active members of a professional association designed to serve their needs, have been educated in programs that met preparation standards for their specialty, and are credentialed for the work they do. This chapter elaborates on those three components and will explain how both students and practicing professionals can use the components to their best advantage as well as to the advantage of the clients they serve. This chapter also includes some speculation about the future of the three components: professional associations, accreditation standards, and credentialing in counseling.
